MORE INFORMATION

Sow: Peas and French beans do best in sunny and open spaces with good drainage. Take your pots and plant one seed in each. Make sure that they are about 2cm deep. Next to each of your canes, plant your pots, about 5-8cm apart.

Grow: Once your peas have sprouted their green shoots keep the soil moist and let them grow. Once they are about  8cm tall you can move them into their final home. If this is outside dig a hole just bigger than your pot and pop them in.

Tend: Keep an eye out for caterpillars and aphids. If any of your plants develop something called pea leaf or spot, which presents with yellow and brown markings on the leaves or pods, these need to be removed and burned/binned to stop the spread. Be careful not to overwater the peas during their seedling stage as this encourages leaf growth. For French Beans watch out for slugs and snails!

Harvest: The first pods will be ready when they feel firm and full, pick them off the plant and then pinch out the tops of the pea plants. This will encourage more growth and give you an ongoing crop. You can also eat these pea tops. Once they have finished cropping you can cut the stems dig out the roots and compost it.
